What is Amazon Alexa calling and how to use it on your Echo device or Android/ Apple smartphone

Amazon Alexa

Amazon Alexa has rolled out a brand new calling feature for Echo users and even for iOS and Android users who have the Alexa app on their smartphones. This calling feature is actually a budget savior for you if you use the Alexa device or app on your smartphone. Just like Whatsapp and Viber, you can make totally free calls to the Alexa users. Currently, the feature is for U.S-based users only but the company plans to roll out the feature for other regions as well.

Echo Show

Amazon introduced the Echo show speakers last month with a display option. To make full use of the option, the company has release the Alexa-Alexa calling feature through which you can make audio and video calls to the supported devices. The idea is basically to provide a free calling and messaging system to Alexa community.
To make your Echo device able to make a call, all you need to have is an Amazon account, a valid mobile phone number, and the Alexa app. Make sure that you have at least Android 5.0 or iOS 9.0 while using the mobile version. Once you are done with the setup, you can use the service on Echo or Echo Dot.

Setting Up Echo for Calling

Install the Amazon Alexa app for your Android or iOS device. Some of the modern Android devices have the app inbuilt. Just make sure that you are using the latest version. Now you need to sign up for the service and for that, tap the ‘Conversation’ icon on the home screen and then follow the onscreen instructions. After some formalities directed to you by the app, you’ll be able to place a call through Alexa.

To start calling, simply tap the ‘Conversation’ icon and select the Contact icon in the upper corner. Pick any contact whom you want to call and start calling. To do the same through Echo, say “Alexa, call [name of contact].”

What Else?

In addition to Alexa calling, you can also send text and voice messages. If you don’t want to receive a call from any of your Alexa contacts, simply turn on the ‘Do Not Disturb‘ mode to block the incoming calls temporarily.
