AMD new VEGA platform is finally out with their recent Radeon VEGA Frontier Edition graphics card. It’s been two years since we first saw AMD launch its Polaris lineup. Which being impressive and all was targeted towards the mainstream market and not the high end. There is even a reason behind it as when it comes to making profits the high end GPU market does not benefit as much as the mainstream market does. Though there is still a place for high end GPU’s in the market. While AMD will be targeting exactly that with their VEGA platform.
The new Radeon VEGA Frontier Edition graphics card is a high end GPU. But it’s not intended for gaming and should be used for professional workloads. We say this because AMD will be optimizing its drives to work better on apps that require graphics horsepower. Rather than something that is related to gaming like the GTX 1080 or GTX 1080 Ti. Aside from that the Radeon VEGA Frontier Edition is first of its kind. While it would also take some time in order to launch a more optimized version of drivers for it.
Below is a benchmark graph showing how the new Radeon VEGA Frontier Edition fairs against its much expensive rivals. Which currently includes two professional GPU’s from Nvidia, including the P5000 and P6000. Do keep in mind that the P5000 costs somewhere around $2000. While the P6000 is going for as high as $5800 according to Google.
As you can see that for a professional GPU priced at $1000 the new Radeon VEGA Frontier Edition is doing quite well. Do also keep in mind that with better optimized drivers the card would also perform a bit better closing the gap even more. Some gaming benchmarks were also leaked on the internet. Showing the performance of Radeon VEGA Frontier Edition to be somewhere between the GTX 1070 and GTX 1080.
