Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk announced on New Year’s eve that the company has started introducing the 8.1 software update, which also includes a very popular Auto pilot feature, to 1000 HW2-era electric vehicles. It is to be remembered that Tesla has already unveiled its 8.2 update before Christmas that featured two Easter eggs; Holiday light show for Model X and a trip to Mars for Model S.
A decision to expand the update (8.1) to the rest of the cars is yet to take place.
All the Tesla electric vehicles are equipped with necessary hardware that make them capable of self-driving abilities. However, the necessary software feature is not built-in, and has to be upgraded, whenever needed.
HW-2 era models are equipped with eight cameras, unlike the previous models with only one camera. moreover , they have 12 ultrasonic sensors that help them identify objects from double distance, compared with other models.
As of the Autopilot, not all features are provided to all models; for example, automatic emergency braking, collision warning alert etc. HW-2 cars will get it now. However, other models have still to wait for their turn.
Talking about the update to other models, Musk said that if the 1000 HW-2 model cars did not come up with any field issues after verification of the update, then the update will be ensured to all other electric vehicles within a week’s time.
Although some critics raise eyebrows on the company’s Autopilot feature that has become a part of several incidents, its recent performance in predicting an accident has made it very popular.
