It looks like 5G is not just a glimmer on the horizon anymore after recent Qualcomm announcement. The company announced that 20 companies are already committed to use their Qualcomm X50 NR modem. Samsung will also be among the big companies, using Qualcomm X50 NR in its devices to come.
The companies to ship their devices with Qualcomm X50 NR modem includes, HMD Global, Samsung, Asus, LG, OPPO, Sharp, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi, ZTE and many other. But among all of them Samsung seems to be the best choice for Qualcomm, as being the biggest Android manufacturer in the world. Intel is also on board with what Qualcomm is trying to achieve. The company has already started its trails with Korean Telecom Company named KT Telekom. Though these trails are not based on the official 5G NR standard.
The launch of the next Galaxy phone is just around the corner. So it wouldn’t be a mistake to assume that the upcoming Galaxy S9 will indeed be running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 in some parts of the world. Which includes countries like USA, Japan and China. This also leads us to believe that the 2019 Galaxy model that Samsung will be launching next year will have support for Qualcomm 5G NR standard. Aside from that Samsung might also launch mid ranged devices with 5G support.
China is also in favor to enter the 5G new radio era with Qualcomm. Even though the country has companies like Huawei and HiSilicon, who still prefer using their own chips. While others like Xiaomi is using Qualcomm chips, that made it a success overnight. Xiaomi also sells its flagship phones to India as well. So it wouldn’t be long before everyone is on board on the Qualcomm 5G standard.
What are your thoughts about the future of 5G, would you like to see its support on most Android phones in 2019?
