Synology has brought an update for those who loved the idea of the 2016 release, DS916+ in the form of the latest 4-bay DS918+ NAS. The DiskStation has an Intel Celeron J3455 processor at the backend and the NAS comes in two memory variants:

As far as the hardware specs are concerned, we have:

  • 64-bit 1.5GHz (2.3GHz) CPU
  • 4GB DDR3L
  • Dual Gigabit Ethernet ports (Link Aggregation / Failover support)

Speaking of the unique features of the DS918+ 4-bay NAS, we are looking at:

  • Processor: Intel Celeron J3455 with a clock speed of 1.5GHz (burst up to 2.3GHz)
  • Memory: 4GB reference version and an 8GB flagship version
  • Encryption: AES-NI hardware encryption engine and a hardware-accelerated transcoding engine which supports the transcoding of two channels of H.265/H.264 4K videos at the same time
  • Two spare SO-DIMM slots for the 4GB variant
  • Support for H.264 (AVC), H.265 (HEVC), MPEG-2 and VC-1 formats at a maximum resolution of 4096 x 2160 (4K) at 30fps
  • Sequential throughput of up to 226MB/s for reads and 222MB/s for writes (with both LAN ports being used in Link Aggregation mode)
