Loot boxes are slowly and gradually becoming a part of every other game these days as it may seem like a good idea to the game developers to earn some extra money. Sure, it falls under the gambling tag and many gamers are losing their mind for this, but for some, this is just a normal thing. Many of the games these days including Destiny 2, Middle-earth: Shadow of War and the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront 2 have become a part of this loot box culture but Blizzard’s CEO is confident that Overwatch is different.
The President and Co-founder of the game developing studio (Blizzard), Mike Morhaime says:
There is absolutely nothing wrong with crates that give you randomized items. I think that whatever the controversy is, I don’t think Overwatch belongs in that controversy.
I think another element, in terms of the gambling question, the question in terms of that is whether or not you’re actually… There’s an element of converting back into real-world value. I think that’s a critical element, and that element does not exist in Overwatch loot crates.
If you’re going to talk about those things, then you have to look at as, ‘Well, are people trying to make money doing this?’
