GDDR5 graphics memory sounds old when you look at all the developments that the manufacturers have achieved so far with the GDDR6. Especially Micron is the company that has been working on the GDDR6 graphics memory and has kept us updated with the developments made. If you are waiting for the commercial to go on air for your personal satisfaction, wait until the next year.

Bye Bye GDDR5 and GDDR5X

Kristopher Kido, the director of Micron’s global graphics memory business gave an interview to GamesBeat where he expressed his views like:

The Nvidia GeForce 1080 Ti uses the G5X today at 11 gigabits per second with 11 chips. That’s best in class with the fastest memory in the world today. But it has to move forward to keep up with professional graphics workloads and 4K, 5K, and 8K displays in the future. Gaming needs memory bandwidth.

The New Trends

The new graphics memory has been designed with keeping in mind things like:

  • Virtual reality
  • Pushing the boundaries within gaming
  • Cryptocurrency mining
  • Artificial intelligence

There is a whole lot of specs that are rumored to possibly become a part of the GDDR6 memory but keeping things real, let’s just jump into what Kido said:

As GPUs crank out more bandwidth over time, the memory needs to keep up or it’s going to get stuck. Our partners will decide how fast to run it. But it’s clear that performance has to keep increasing for deep learning, autonomous vehicles, and other workloads.

AMD, Samsung, and SK Hynix are also involved in the GDDR6 production but Micron can be placed in the list way ahead than others.
