We’ve been hearing about this ‘Gaming disorder’ informal term for years but now we have a stamp of WHO over it! This was not surprising yet an alarming state for all the mature ones out there that the number of people out there addicted to gaming in all forms i.e. PC/console gaming, mobile gaming etc., has reached to a point of no return. Every year, it just adds up and we end up with an ever-increasing demand for high-end games.
‘Gaming Disorder’ is a Classified Disease
The term “gaming disorder” is added in the revised list of WHO’s new draft of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The list describes the “gaming disorder” as a “pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior” whether it’s online, or offline. Here are the points in which WHO describes it:
- Impaired control over gaming (e.g., onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context)
- Increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities
- Continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences
WHO showed its serious concerns over the issue and we all must be vigilant towards confining the time period toddlers and the young ones waste in useless gaming sessions. Here’s the continuity of WHO’s statement:
The increased risk may be from the frequency of gaming, from the amount of time spent on these activities, from the neglect of other activities and priorities, from risky behaviours associated with gaming or its context, from the adverse consequences of gaming, or from the combination of these. The pattern of gaming is often persists in spite of awareness of increased risk of harm to the individual or to others.
