An individuals who are still using first generation iPhone may have noticed that they are not able to use to their mobile data service from last two weeks. Its because AT & T in not providing its 2G network anymore to their users.

Even though users of the 2G network is very limited nowadays but still there were some users and switching off the network like with out informing the users is not a good idea. Because iPhone 2 worked only on AT&T’s network and by switching it off the network means the end of an ERA.

According to AT&T’s their 2G network was capable of giving the download speed of 70-135 kbps only. And after coming to 3G and LTE it wasn’t a good to a decision to keep 2G network alive, the news of shutting down the 2G network was announced four years ago by AT&T. AT&T also offered some cheap services to the users inorder to get everyone on to 3G/LTE.

At times when Apple first Generation phone was launched in 2007 3G network was available but Apple chooses 2G network to support the phone because 3G used a lot more power than 2G and first Generation iPhoe wasn’t that efficient to support.

First Gen iPhone has abandoned a few years ago because Apple didn’t launch any update since 2010 and the last updated version was iOS 3.1.3.

First Generation iPhone is not the only device which was working on AT&T’s 2G network. There were also some cars depended on 2G network for their transmit diagnostic information updates. Which is more difficult than a smartphone to replace.
