15 6 CEO Dr. Lisa Su has confirmed that AMD will be taping out its 7nm Zen 2 and Navi at the end of this year

During last week AMD financial day CEO Dr. Lisa Su said that 7 Nanometer is very competitive with other technologies out there and that also 7 Nanometer is ready later this year and something AMD would be very aggressive about it as well. So, here’s what she said:

We will be doing tape out later this year, she’s referring to the 7 Nanometer manufacturing process. The word “Tape Out” after looking online basically means that the design is done and is ready to send to manufacturing; meaning (fabrication).

Now this is looking good for AMD if they can hold them self to the schedule, the current Zen CPU which is Ryzen 14 nm so are their upcoming Vega GPU. So, this means that Zen 2 and Navi which is their next generation GPU will be on the 7nm process. Now we know Navi is AMD answer to Volta.

Based on my previous article RX Vega coming out sometime in July, Zen 2 and Navi is to counter Intel and Nvidia’s Volta. Now just focusing on GPU side of things here. This means that AMD would have Navi ready to compete with the Nvidia’s Volta during the same time. Which raise a big question here “If Nvidia decide’s to release Volta in December will AMD follow?”

Lisa Su said that 7 nm is taped out before the end of the year so, Nvidia can just release Volta at anytime now. Because they had a lot of benefits from Pascal already.

AMD is prepared this time ready to counter Nvidia but think from a mindset of the customer. I mean if one customer just buy a Vega and find out that Navi is right around the corner in less than 5 months. So let us know what do you think in this hypothetical scenario? Do you think that this would alienate Vega owners?
